Becoming an Absentee Owner of Your Business

Few people dream of owning a business that requires them to be there sixty or seventy hours a week, including weekends and holidays and never gives them a chance for some time away. Unfortunately, that is the kind of business many people end up building.

For obvious reasons, however, a business that allows the owner to be somewhat or totally absent from the day to day operation of the business is more valuable than one which requires a constant owner's presense.

If you want to build a more valuable business, it is in your interest to start planning how you can run it with this goal in mind. The first step may be to grow it to a point where the sales and profits will allow you to add more staff so that you can have that option.

The second important step is to create an operating system that you can then teach the employees to use so they know what and how to accomplish critical business tasks even when you aren't there. As you are able to delegate more and more of your daily tasks you will be able to scale the business even further and create greater and greater value.

Obviously, if the business isn't limited to the amount of work an owner can accomplish alone then the business has much greater potential for growth. This is what you want to set as your goal.

For a much more complete explanation and analysis of the how and why of creating a business system based around employees doing all the work, read the E-Myth book by Michael Gerber. It is like a breath of fresh air for owners who are struggling with the constantly increasing demands of their business and who don't see a way out.
